Black Hole

Black Hole

Sagittarius A*, the black hole at our galaxy's center, is 4 million solar masses and was first imaged in 2022.

A black hole is an object whose gravity is so strong that not even light can escape. At the center of the Milky Way sits Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole of about 4 million solar masses roughly 27,000 light-years from Earth; the Event Horizon Telescope captured its shadow in May 2022, following its 2019 image of M87*. The hole itself is invisible, but the glowing hot gas swirling around it reveals its outline.
